From Dakar to Saint-Louis
This August, I got a chance to work in Senegal. So I took advantage of this very special experience to make a personal project - taking portraits of local people. During the Pandemic, many social activities in Senegal are suspended. The financial condition of the local people gets worsens. My local friends and I took a road trip from Dakar to Saint-Louis, scouting working people along the way. I tried to capture the inner power of the landscape, as well as the vitality, rawness and the hardship of the people I met.
As an Asian person born in China and living in France for the last 8 years, I try to use photography to contact people of different cultural backgrounds and try to know more about them. Even as 2020 continues to be a year that is filled with anger, estranging people from each other, I wanted to make works about African cultures to help myself and other Chinese people who don’t know much and who might be full of neglects and prejudices to better understand them.
I’ll continue this project when the pandemic is over.
